Frequently asked questions.

1. Who writes this web site ?
As its name implies, www.johnsunter.com is written and edited by me, John Sunter with help of a few friends (The team at johnsunter.com, working hard (hard ?) in the pub, in preparation for our re-launch).

I am originally from Manchester, and moved to live in Chester 8 years ago. I own a house in the city centre.

I make my living in technology (specifically infrastructures and networking). My hobbies are travel, bushcraft, and what I call, the pursuit of adventure. I also enjoy working on this web site, and socializing with my friends, in and around Chester City Centre,

2. What is this web site actually for ?
The web site has 3 main purposes:

a. The front page usually has information about what I am doing at the moment (a lot of my friends and family live a distance away and instead of telling them what I am doing, they can actually see it). Its also used to organise social events (ie my stand up evenings) and relevant news (ie the tragic death of Sir Edmund Hillary).

b. A record of all the places I visit, all the activities I do, and all the people I meet.

c. To motivate the un-knowing, to pursue adventure in all of its forms. I spent years of my life, getting out of bed on Saturday and watching TV until the pubs open. It doesn't have to be that way.

3. You talk about adventure, that's fine for you, but I don't have the money or time, anyway what do you actually mean by the Pursuit of Adventure.
I believe that we live in a special time. Its possible for example to:

a. Stay in a 5 star hotel for next to nothing by booking it on laterooms.com
b. With the present price of flights, you could visit Rome, Paris, Amsterdam etc for less than £50.
c. buy a full set of outdoor equipment for less than £80 using ebay and value retailers like regatta.
d. buy an apex ticket for £20 and see London, Edinburgh, Cardiff.
e. travel to Scotland, rent the required equipment and actually go mountaineering, in ice and snow.
f. learn to light a fire without matches, and make a shelter and sleep in it.

I have even read that you can climb Everest for £27,000 !.

But adventure doesn't just have to be about money. For a few pounds, you can visit a Zoo, and see animals from all over the world, hire a rowing boat and go out on a lake for the afternoon. I learned on a bushcraft course, how to make a rod and go fishing (the line and hooks cost less than £3.50.

Its important to remember that you don't always need to travel. An evening in the house, watching Raiders of the Lost Ark, and whilst eating an authentic Egyptian meal you prepared yourself, is adventure of a different kind.

One day, time will run out for all of us. I believe that enjoying at least 100 adventures before that day comes will make most of us content, in the moments before our time runs out.

4. Do you get any money from this site.
I keep getting asked this, some people cant believe a person would promote a website so enthusiastically when they don't make any profit. I really do believe in this site and the principles it stands for.

I don't make any money whatsoever from this site, and if I recommend a company, individual or product its because I have used them personally and been impressed (Its for this reason, that I pay full price for everything).

5. Your design and coding are unorthodox and dare I say it amateurish ?
This web site is all about its contents, the stories pictures and ideas.

I have 2 friends who are web developers, and who offer to re-write it for me all the time. This is a work in progress, and much like my rock climbing skill, is more about having a go, than the pursuit of excellence, which is the basis of my professional work in technology.

As stated above, I am not a web developer. Working on this site is fun, because I am still learning about the web and improvising where I have to.

6. Isn't it a bit arrogant or boastful to have a web site, devoted to you ?
This web site isn't about me, its about the things I do and the people I meet. The things that happen on nights out, walking in the desert and meeting people who have interesting ideas and outlook's.

I remember working somewhere, and before leaving work to go traveling for several months, some people would collect email addresses, and bombard you with details of their trips, pictures etc. This website sits on the Internet, waiting to be visited and is not intrusive. If people don't like it, they don't have to come back (although I would like it if they would sign my guest book and say why so I could at least review the content/expectation gap).

It has to be called something, and since I received the domain name johnsunter.com as a gift, I thought I would use it (Thanks Paul N.)

7. What is the situation with photographs and representation ?
I don't usually ask people for permission to take photographs, as the moment I do that, people seem to act differently, and the pictures don't look natural.

Obviously, if anyone is unhappy about being on the web site, I will instantly remove the picture (although it has never happened before).

If you would like to use any of the pictures on this site, please feel free to download them directly from the site (if you would like bigger pictures, just email me, and I will email back the original)

I don't ask to be acknowledged specifically, but if you are at a party, it would be nice if you mentioned our site, and more people came to look at it.

8. How do I stop the quotes scrolling, so that I can read them. ?
If you move your mouse over the quotes, they will stop moving.

Thanks for visiting our site, and please keep coming back, tell your friends about it and post something on our Guest book.
